What Is Alternative Provision?

Alternative provision is education arranged for students who can't attend mainstream school — whether due to exclusion, illness, or other reasons. At Player Ready, we use gaming and technology as the foundation for learning.

We are not a school. We don't replicate the environment that wasn't working. Instead, we create a space where young people feel safe, engaged, and motivated to learn. Our mentors use Minecraft, Roblox, coding, and digital creativity as tools to build relationships, develop skills, and restore confidence.

Who We Support

We work with young people aged 7-25 who need something different from mainstream education.

SEND & Learning Difficulties

Autism (ASD), ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other specific learning difficulties. Our mentors adapt sessions to each student's processing style.

SEMH Needs

Social, emotional and mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and emotional dysregulation. Gaming creates a safe space to build resilience.

School Refusers & Non-Attenders

Young people who have disengaged from mainstream education. We rebuild confidence and motivation through activities they genuinely enjoy.

Exclusions & Managed Moves

Students at risk of or following permanent exclusion. A fresh environment with no school associations helps them reset and re-engage.

Medical & Chronic Conditions

Young people unable to attend school due to medical conditions. Flexible scheduling and online options ensure education continues.

Trauma & Adverse Childhood Experiences

Trauma-informed mentoring in a calm, low-pressure environment. Our approach reduces anxiety and builds trust at the student's pace.

How It Works

From referral to results — a straightforward process designed around the student.

1

Referral

A professional (teacher, SENCO, social worker) or parent submits a referral via our online form. We respond within 24 hours.

2

Assessment & Matching

We review the student's needs, interests, and goals. We match them with a mentor whose skills and personality are the right fit.

3

Personalised Plan

Together with the referrer, we create a tailored education plan. Sessions are built around the student's interests — Minecraft, Roblox, coding, or digital art.

4

Sessions Begin

1:1 or small group sessions at one of our venues or online. Typically 1-3 hours per session, up to 15 hours per week. Flexible scheduling.

5

Progress & Reporting

Regular progress reports to the commissioner. Session notes after every visit. Half-termly reviews to adjust the plan as the student grows.

How Is Alternative Provision Funded?

There are several routes to funding your child's provision. We can help you navigate the right one.

EHCP-Based Funding

If your child or young person has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), funding for alternative provision can be arranged either via a school (even if your child is not currently attending in person) or directly from the Local Authority as part of the EHCP provision.

All our sessions can be mapped to individual learning outcomes and support the goals outlined in EHCPs or education plans. We attend annual reviews and contribute progress evidence to support your child's plan.

EOTAS (Education Other Than At School)

EOTAS is the legal framework for educating young people who cannot attend a mainstream or special school. As an EOTAS provider, Player Ready delivers education that meets the student's needs while fulfilling the local authority's duty to provide suitable education.

We work closely with the referring school or local authority to align our delivery with the student's overall education plan.

Section 19 Emergency Provision

If your child has been out of education for 15 days or more, the Local Authority has a legal duty under Section 19 of the Education Act 1996 to arrange suitable alternative education. This is often short-term or interim funding while a longer-term placement is found.

We can accept Section 19 referrals and begin provision quickly — typically within 5-10 working days of referral.

Direct Payments & Personal Budgets

Some families receive Direct Payments or Personal Budgets to arrange their child's education provision themselves. Player Ready can be paid via these funding routes, giving families control over where and how their child learns.

Self-Funded & AP-Lite Options

For families who cannot access formal funding — including Elective Home Educators or those awaiting an EHCP — self-funded places are available. 1:1 sessions are available at £40/hr, and our in-venue small group sessions are £18.75/hr (maximum 3:1 ratio).

We also offer AP-Lite: reduced-length sessions sitting between our Clubs and full Alternative Provision. These two-hour SEND-friendly groups of up to six young people provide access to our provision at a more affordable rate.

School-Funded Placements

Schools can fund placements directly, even in areas where we are not yet on the Local Authority's approved provider list. This is common for schools with students on reduced timetables or those needing short-term reengagement support.

Session Times & Structure

Alternative Provision at Player Ready is offered Monday through Friday during term time between 09:00 and 15:00, with flexible options outside these hours for students with health or accessibility needs.

Sessions are typically 1-3 hours, with up to 15 hours per week maximum for under-16s. We are part-time provision — we are not a school and do not replicate the environment that wasn't working for your child.

Post-16 students working towards NOCN qualifications need a minimum of 6 hours per week.

Delivery Options: In-Person, Online & Hybrid

In-person 1:1 and small groups are available at our venues in Truro, Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton, and Portsmouth.

Online 1:1 sessions are available nationwide for students who cannot travel or prefer home-based learning. Online sessions are 1:1 only — we do not run online group sessions for under-16s for safeguarding reasons.

Hybrid delivery combines online and in-person sessions to accommodate health needs, anxiety, or learners transitioning back to in-person education.

Learning Pathways & Curriculum

Our current learning pathways include Game Development with Minecraft, Roblox, Unity and Unreal Engine; 3D Modelling and Animation; Stop Motion and Video Editing; Robotics and Physical Computing; Digital Art and Design; and STEM Challenges and Tech Projects.

All sessions are mapped to individual learning outcomes and can support EHCP goals. Students can also work towards Level 1-3 AQA Unit Awards in our bespoke subject areas, and Post-16 learners can pursue NOCN accredited qualifications.

Ages & Who We Work With

We work with children and young people aged 7 to 25, including those who have an EHCP or EOTAS arrangement, are out of school or awaiting a placement, have experienced school trauma, anxiety or exclusion, are Electively Home Educated (EHE), or are post-16 young people seeking alternative routes to qualifications and re-engagement.

Our provision is suitable for young people with or without formal SEND diagnoses. We specialise in ASD, ADHD, PDA, anxiety, trauma, and other neurodivergent profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from parents, professionals, and local authorities.

Is Player Ready a school?

No. We are not a school and we don't replicate the school environment. Player Ready is a non-school alternative provision provider — part-time, flexible, and built around the individual. We offer up to 15 hours per week for under-16s, delivered in a relaxed, tech-focused environment.

What is the difference between AP and EOTAS?

AP (Alternative Provision) placements are usually commissioned by a school or local authority to supplement or replace in-school provision. EOTAS (Education Otherwise Than At School) is a different legal route where the LA arranges education outside school under Section 19. We support both pathways and can advise on the most appropriate route for your child.

Do you need to be on our Local Authority's approved list?

We are approved with over 40 Local Authorities and growing. However, we can still work with self-funding parents, direct referrals from schools, or via Direct Payments regardless of being listed on a particular Local Authority's approved list. If your LA isn't listed, contact us and we can help fast-track the approval process.

How quickly can provision start?

We typically start provision within 5-10 working days of referral. We offer free discovery sessions so the young person can meet their mentor and explore whether Player Ready is the right fit before committing. We can also arrange intro videos or online meet-ups to reduce anxiety before the first session.

What qualifications can students achieve?

Students can work towards AQA Unit Awards (AQA Centre 84612) across our curriculum areas. Post-16 students can pursue NOCN accredited qualifications in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development (SETPD) at Entry Level 3 through Level 3, available as Award, Certificate, and Diploma levels. Player Ready is an approved NOCN Centre (No. 12116).

How much does self-funded provision cost?

Self-funded 1:1 sessions are £40 per hour. In-venue small group sessions (maximum 3:1 ratio) are £18.75 per hour. We also offer AP-Lite: reduced-length two-hour SEND-friendly group sessions at a lower cost, sitting between our Clubs and full AP. These are ideal for Elective Home Educators and families without funded support.
